Test Score and Test Report Form
1. What is
the passing score in IELTS?
Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 1 to 9. A profile score is reported for each skill. Overall Band Scores and scores for each sub-test (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) are reported in whole bands or half bands.
2. How is my
overall band score calculated?
The Overall Band Score is calculated by taking the mean of the total of the four individual sub-test scores. Each of the sub-test scores is equally weighted.
Overall Band Scores are reported to the nearest whole or half band. For the avoidance of doubt, the following rounding convention applies; if the average across the four skills ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.
Thus, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.0 for Writing and 7.0 for Speaking would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 6.5 (25 / 4 = 6.25 = Band 6.5).
Likewise, a candidate achieving 4.0 for Listening, 3.5 for Reading, 4.0 for Writing and 4.0 for Speaking would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 4.0 (15.5 / 4 = 3.875 = Band 4.0).
On the other hand, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking would be awarded band 6 (24.5 / 4 = 6.125 = Band 6)
For more details, please refer to the IELTS global website: http://www.ielts.org/teachersandresearchers/scoreprocessingreportinginterpretation/article231.aspx .
3. Can I
cancel the scores?
No, but you can
choose not to pass on the scores to embassies or universities.
4. What is
the validity period of the test results?
Your test score
remains valid for up to two years after the test date. However,
receiving institutions may make their own decision on the validity
period of the scores.
5. Will a
previous test score affect my later score?
No, the scores from
each test are independent.
6. Can the
IELTS band scores be directly compared to scores in TOEFL or CET?
No, these three
tests are different language tests designed for different purposes.
7. How can
each candidate get a fair score from his/her examiner? Are there any
differences from examiner to examiner, and from area to area?
All band scores are
based on the candidate's performance on the test day using the same
assessment criteria to ensure fairness.Systematic monitoring and double marking of a proportion of answer sheets is carried out at each administration. All IELTS examiners are fully
trained and their performance is regularly monitored.
8. Can I get
my score by telephone, fax or e-mail?
